Low-Energy Light Bulbs

Low-energy light bulbs, you may have heard a lot about them but have you taken in how much money you can save?

Compared to traditional household bulbs, energy-saving bulbs can last approximately 10 times longer (10 years compared to 1 year). There are also LED bulbs available on the High Street, which can last up to 25 years.

Traditional 40W, 60W and 100W bulbs have equivalent low-energy versions, which are rated approximately 8W, 10W and 15-20W respectively. By replacing a 40W traditional bulb with an 8W low-energy one, you have immediately cut your use by 20% for that bulb.(Which)

Lighting in the house equates for nearly 20% of your electricity bills, so going for a low-energy light bulb can definitely make a difference that you’ll be able to notice.

Mills CNC Pledge Support To VTST?

Machine tools distributor Mills CNC has pledged its support to VTST – The Vulcan to the Sky Trust. VTST is a British Charity which owns the Vulcan XH558.

Mills CNC is a major supplier of advanced machine tool technologies to the aerospace and defence sector, so its involvement in VTST’s 2015 project should come as no surprise. This support will aim to inspire the next generation of young people who are considering pursuing a career in engineering and manufacturing, whilst also extending the flying life of the XH558.

“It is well documented that the UK needs more engineers and more scientists to help it compete and win on the world stage, but we just aren’t attracting sufficient numbers of talented young people into the manufacturing sector.
Through the publicity generated by Operation 2015 and with VTST’s outreach education programme, I am confident that the project will help challenge young people’s (often negative) perceptions about careers in engineering and manufacturing. And that has to be a good thing. This is why we’re proud to be involved and associated with such an inspirational heritage project.” (Nick White, Mills CNC)

The Different Types Of Energy Meters

There are loads of different meters out there that measure energy, but they’re not all the same. There are many ways in which your gas and electricity can be measured. Below are three popular ways;

Standard meter – Also known as the electromechanical induction meter, it counts the number of revolutions dependent on an aluminium disc which rotates dependent on the amount of power used.

Digital meter – Nice and simple, the figure is actually displayed for you.

Prepayment meter – A prepayment meter is known as a pay-as-you-go  version of paying for your gas and/or electricity. You top up depending on how much energy you want to use, and if your money runs out, so does your energy.

A Different Way To Store Solar Energy

Storing solar energy is extremely important, especially when the sun isn’t shining. Finding a way to store energy is an obstacle that can be overcome though.

You can store solar power by converting the sun’s energy into heat. There are plants already based in Spain which can store excess energy in molten salt. These solar plants can absorb high temperatures without changing state.

With many different ways of storing sunlight available, will solar power negate the need for fossil fuels in the future? We doubt it would go down to zero, but we can foresee a future where we use other forms of technology to cut down on fossil fuel use.
