Who doesn’t want to save energy and most importantly – save money? Here are a few recommendations by the energy saving trust, wish we’re sure will come in handy and save everyone a few pounds and pennies!

Understand your bill – The information on a typical energy bill can be confusing. But understanding it can go a long way to helping you get to grips with your energy use.

Switch off standby – You can save around £30 a year just by remembering to turn your appliances off standby mode.

Almost all electrical and electronic appliances can be turned off at the plug without upsetting their programming. You may want to think about getting a standby saver which allows you to turn all your appliances off standby in one go.

Careful in your kitchen – You can save around £50 a year just by using your kitchen appliances more carefully:

  • Use a bowl to wash up rather than a running tap and save £30 a year in energy bills.

  • Only fill the kettle with the amount of water that you need and save around £7 a year.

  • Cutback your washing machine use by just one cycle per week and save £5 a year on energy, and a further £8 a year on metered water bills.

5 Tips on How to Choose the Best Waterjet Cutting Machines

When you are buying waterjet cutting machines, you have wide range of options to choose from. The different machines differ in terms of their make, efficiency and price. This is why it is necessary that you perform a thorough search in order to ensure that you buy machines that will meet your products and others needs in an efficient manner. You need to assess your production needs and match the machine to the needs. By doing this, you will be able to avoid unnecessary expenses. Thickness and materials you want to cut

One of the factors you need to consider is the materials and thickness that you intend to cut with the machines you are buying. As you do the shopping, you need to know that parts that are over half an inch in thickness require to be cut with at least 50 HP each head. You need to note that the small heads are more costly per every inch. However, it can be more effective to run two small heads instead of running a single large head. It is good to examine cycle times and price per part for every configuration in order to determine which one between one head or two heads is more effective. When Looking For An Electrician…

There are many worries when you have to call for work to be done. Unless you know the person, it can be hard to trust the worker in question. Here are three things we suggest you do when looking for an electrician.

  1. Check that the electrician you’re considering is qualified and part of any government approved schemes. Also ask to see paperwork. It’s easy to say you’re qualified without showing any proof.
  2. Ask around and get more than one quote. Atleast then you will know what the going rate is on average.
  3. If you’re still not certain about a certain electrician, ask for references. Any good electrician, would have more than one reference they can call upon.

How To Be More Energy Efficient When Using Kitchen Appliances

By changing the way we use the appliances in our kitchen, will mean less energy used, leading to cheaper bills. And who doesn’t want that? Below are a few suggestions, to get the most out of certain appliances.

Washing machines – When your clothes aren’t too dirty, use the ‘quick wash’ feature. This feature will wash as well as needed, whilst doing it in half the usual time.

Kettles – Only fill your kettle with the amount of water needed.

Cooker – When cooking inside an oven, use glass or ceramic dishes as these will speed up the process.

Dishwashers – Only use the dishwasher when full, as you will be getting the most out of your money.

EU Energy Efficiency Labels Explained

When you go shopping for a large electrical appliance, you may notice the energy label stuck next to the product. So what does this label tell you about the item in question?

Energy Efficiency Rating – With A+++ being the most efficient and D being the least, this section of the label will tell you where the product lies based on its energy consumption.

Annual Energy Consumption – This will show the annual energy consumed in kWh per year.

Product Specific Information – This is all dependent on the product itself. You will see information such as noise levels, capacity and water consumption.

Energy Efficient Air Conditioners

Even when you compare an air conditioner to a heater, they are very, very energy hungry. This is why energy efficient technology is very important when it comes air conditioning unit, but mostly the ones on the market still have high energy consumption. This might not be the case for much longer though.

In 2014 it was announced that a new technology in the space cooling industry could see the amount of energy required to produce the same result of current technology reduced by up to 90%. How does this work, you might be asking? Well, first you need to understand a little about the current technology:

Air conditioners function in basically the same way as a refrigerator, in that they absorb the heat energy in one space and then direct that heat to another area. Fridges are very energy hungry too, but when you consider how much larger the space an air conditioner is trying to cool you can see why they are so expensive to run. The difference between the way a fridge and an air conditioner works is basically down to how a fridge calls the interior and expels the heat while an air conditioner absorbs the in the surroundings and contains it in the interior.

The new tech which is allowing us to cool space far more efficiently is actually a water absorbing gel. Previously we could also follow the same process as the new versions of air conditioners do, but because the water absorbing materials were a rarity, demands couldn’t be met.

The water absorbing gel is important because, when the water in the air conditioning units heats up and turns to vapour, without the gel you need to use energy to compress the vapour back into a liquid; with the gel, the water vapour can be absorbed and the heat removed without the need to expend energy on compression.

Electricity Hungry Appliances

Are you looking at your electricity bill wondering why it’s so high? Of course it could depend on the price plan that you’re actually on and whether there have been an price increases, but the majority of the time it’s all about the appliances which are used and how much you use them.

The most power hungry appliances in the average gone are as follows;

  • Air conditioner and heater
  • Tumble dryer
  • Water pump
  • Hair dryer
  • Refrigerator
  • Desktop computer
  • Light bulbs

Air conditioners and heaters use the most electricity of all appliances, so be wary of the amount of time you keep such an appliance on for. Of course when it’s the middle of the summer, you may have to keep your air conditioner on just bear in mind the costs.

The Pros and Cons of Using Smart LED Bulbs

Smart LED bulbs have been doing the rounds over the past couple of years, but only now have they really started to become popular. Below we’ll explain the benefits and the down sides of using LED light bulbs over incandescent bulbs.

The main benefits of using LED instead of incandescent bulbs:

  • LED produce much less heat, meaning they use less energy.
  • LED lights last much longer compared to incandescent bulbs.
  • You can control the LED lights via your smartphone / tablet.
  • Use the lights on a timer to help you wake up in the morning.

The down sides of using LED lights:

  • Much more expensive to set up compared to sticking with incandescent lights.
  • LED lights will take much longer to return your investment via saving money on your energy bills.

Does Dimming Your Lights Help Save Less Electricity

Dimmed lights are more and more popular, with many home owners preferring the benefits of having control over the brightness setting in their living space but is there an added benefit? Is less electricity consumed if you use a dimmer switch? Find out below.

The answer is yes, dimmers to help consume less electricity. Dimmers work by using less of the mains cycle, ultimately this means that you will be using less electricity to power the lights. The only issue with this is that if you use incandescent light bulbs, they will be less efficient as they won’t be used at their rated temperature. So in conclusion, yes light dimmers will help save electricity but if you’re just looking for a less bright light, consider switching to a different light bulb instead as they will work more efficiently.
